VIOLATION OF QUEBEC ARTISTS’ COPYRIGHTS BY META’S AI TOOLS: A BREACH OF THE CANADIAN COPYRIGHT ACT.
This class action seeks to compensate all persons domiciled in the province of Quebec who hold copyright in an artistic work, whose works have been used without authorization by the defendants to develop, train, and/or commercialize their artificial intelligence models since September 23, 2023.
Latest Developments
On October 8, 2025, the plaintiff filed an Application to Institute Proceedings in the Superior Court. The class action seeks to obtain compensatory damages, the restitution of profits illegally earned by OpenAI, a permanent injunction ordering the immediate cessation of any unauthorized use of protected works, as well as punitive damages intended to sanction copyright violations and prevent their recurrence.

You may be part of the class action if you meet the following criteria:
- You currently reside or have resided in Quebec
- You hold copyrights on an artistic work that has been used without authorization by META to develop, train, and/or commercialize its artificial intelligence models since September 23, 2023.
